What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)? A Plain-English Guide

For business owners and marketing leaders who keep hearing about AEO but want a clear, jargon-free explanation. If you know SEO but aren't sure how AI answer engines change the game, this is your starting point.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring your content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite your brand when buyers ask questions in your space. It's SEO for the AI era: instead of ranking in a list of links, you're cited inside a synthesized answer.

Buyers used to search Google, see ten blue links, and click. Now they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews and get a synthesized answer with citations. If your brand isn't cited in that answer, you're invisible, even if you rank #1 on Google.

AEO is how you fix that. This guide explains what it is, how it works, and what to do about it. For the full strategic framework, see our From SEO to AI Visibility Playbook.

Search engines used to return lists of links. AI answer engines return synthesized answers with citations. Your goal shifts from "rank in the list" to "be cited in the answer."

What drives visibilityKeywords, backlinks, page authorityAnswer-first content, structured data, authority signals

The shift is simple: AI engines don't return links, they return answers. If your content isn't structured to be extracted and cited, you won't appear.

How AI answer engines choose what to cite

AI engines cite content that directly answers the question, is technically extractable, and is corroborated by trusted sources.

FactorWhat AI engines look forWhat you need to do
Direct answersThe answer is in the first sentence, not buried in paragraph 4Write answer-first content
ExtractabilityThe content is structured with clear headings, lists, and schemaUse FAQ schema, Article schema, clear H2/H3 structure
AuthorityThe source is trusted and corroborated by other sourcesBuild authority through consistent publishing and mentions
FreshnessThe content is recent and up to datePublish continuously and update existing content
Brand consistencyYour brand name is consistent across the webStandardize your name everywhere

For a detailed breakdown of how to get cited, see our post on getting cited in AI Overviews.

    The 5 pillars of AEO

AEO rests on five pillars: answer-first content, structured data, technical crawlability, authority signals, and brand consistency.

    1. Answer-first content

Write your content so the first sentence of each section directly answers the question implied by the heading. AI engines lift the first sentence as a citation. If your first sentence is "Let's explore this topic," it won't get cited. If it's "AEO is the practice of optimizing content for AI answer engines," it will.

    2. Structured data

Add FAQ schema, Article schema, and Organization schema to your pages. This gives AI engines machine-readable signals about what your content is about and what questions it answers.

    3. Technical crawlability

Ensure your site is fast, mobile-friendly, and accessible to crawlers. AI engines need to crawl and parse your content to cite it. A slow, blocked, or poorly structured site won't get cited.

    4. Authority signals

AI engines look for corroboration. If multiple trusted sources mention your brand, AI engines are more likely to cite you. Build authority through consistent publishing, community mentions, and being referenced by other sites.

    5. Brand consistency

If your brand is "JYNLAB" but your content sometimes says "Jyn Lab" or "Jynlab," AI engines may not connect the mentions. Standardize your brand name across all content, social profiles, and external mentions.

AEO vs SEO: do you need both?

Yes. SEO and AEO are complementary, not competitive. SEO gets you into Google's ranked results. AEO gets you cited in AI-generated answers. Most businesses need both.

How to start with AEO today

Start with three actions: audit your content for answer-first structure, add FAQ schema to your key pages, and test your target queries in AI engines.

    1. Audit your top 10 pages. Read the first sentence of each section. Does it directly answer the question? If not, rewrite it.
    2. Add FAQ schema. Add structured data to your key pages so AI engines can extract your answers.
    3. Test your queries. Type 10 questions your buyers would ask into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. See if you're cited. If not, you know where to focus.
    4. Publish consistently. AI engines favor fresh content. A continuous publishing cadence gives AI engines more to cite.
    5. Track your citations. Monitor whether your brand appears in AI answers for your target queries over time. See our AI visibility metrics guide for how to measure this.
