Stripe vs Lemon Squeezy vs Polar: The Real Question Is Tax, Not Features

The honest breakdown of payment tools for solo SaaS builders. Stripe, Lemon Squeezy, Polar, and Paddle compared by fees, tax handling, and when to use each.


You built the product. People want to pay. Now you have a choice that will follow you for years: handle sales tax yourself, or pay someone else to do it. That is the real question behind "Stripe vs Lemon Squeezy." Not features. Tax liability.

The question nobody explains properly

Payment processor (Stripe): processes the charge. You are the merchant. You collect the money. You are responsible for sales tax, VAT, GST in every country where you have customers. That means registration, calculation, filing, remittance.

Merchant of Record (Lemon Squeezy, Paddle, Polar): they are the legal seller. They collect the money, handle all tax compliance globally, and pay you your share minus their fee. You never touch tax paperwork.

At $500 MRR, the fee difference between 2.9% and 5% is about $10/month. The cost of hiring a tax accountant or using a tax compliance tool (Stripe Tax, Avalara) is $50-200+ per month. The math is obvious at this stage.

Stripe: full control, you handle tax

Pricing: 2.9% + 30c per transaction (US cards). International cards add 1.5%. Currency conversion adds 1%. Effective rate for global SaaS: 4-5.4%.

Best at: Everything payments. The most flexible API, the best documentation, the widest ecosystem. Subscription billing, usage-based pricing, invoicing, payment links. If you need custom billing logic, only Stripe can do it.

Limitation: Tax compliance is entirely on you. Stripe Tax exists ($0.50 per transaction) but you still need to register, file, and remit in each jurisdiction. For a solo builder selling to 30+ countries, this is a full-time job.

Use Stripe when: you sell only in the US, you have a tax accountant, or your MRR is high enough ($10K+) that the fee savings justify the compliance overhead.

Merchant of Record

Lemon Squeezy: the solo builder's MoR

Pricing: 5% + 50c per transaction. Stacking fees: +1.5% international, +0.5% subscriptions, +1.5% PayPal. Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024 and is integrating it as "Stripe Managed Payments" (public preview Feb 2026).

Best at: Zero tax ops for solo builders. Full Merchant of Record handling VAT/GST in 135+ countries, fraud protection, disputes. You get a checkout page and a dashboard. They handle the rest.

Limitation: Higher fees than Stripe direct. The stacking fee structure means an international subscription paid via PayPal costs 5% + 0.5% + 1.5% + 1.5% + 50c = 8.5% + 50c. That adds up at scale.

Merchant of Record

Polar: the open-source-friendly option

Pricing (new accounts post-May 27, 2026): 5% + 50c on the free Starter plan. Pro at $20/month, Growth at $100/month, Scale at $400/month, each unlocking lower rates. Accounts created before May 27 are grandfathered at 4% + 40c.

Best at: Developer tools, open-source projects, and subscription-based products. MoR available. Clean API and developer-first approach.

Limitation: Newer platform, smaller community. Recent pricing restructure penalizes new users vs early adopters. $15 dispute fee regardless of outcome.

Merchant of Record

Paddle: the enterprise-grade MoR

Pricing: 5% + 50c advertised. Effective rate often ~7% once FX and international complexity are factored in. The most expensive option but the most comprehensive.

Best at: Established SaaS selling globally. Covers 200+ countries, all sales tax variants, fraud, chargebacks. The most mature MoR platform.

Limitation: More expensive than alternatives. Less startup-friendly for very early stage. Onboarding can be slower.

Is Stripe or Lemon Squeezy better for a solo SaaS?

If you sell globally and don't want to deal with tax compliance, Lemon Squeezy. The fee premium (2% more) costs less than the tax headache. If you sell only in the US or already have a tax setup, Stripe's lower fees win.

What is a Merchant of Record?

A company that legally sells your product on your behalf. They collect payment, handle sales tax globally, manage disputes, and pay you the remainder. You avoid tax registration in dozens of countries.

Can I switch from Lemon Squeezy to Stripe later?

Yes, but it requires migrating subscribers. Plan for this if you expect to cross $10K MRR where Stripe's lower fees start to matter. The Stripe acquisition may eventually make this easier.
